HORSES.

BLOOD STOCK.

The display of blood stock, as in previous years, is not worthy of the principal thoroughbred breeding centre in- New Zealand. The Wellington Park Stud and that of Messrs Nathan are not represented, but Mr W. Walters, of Papakura, has come to the rescue, and he shows his brood mare Lady Emmeline and two well grown Soult fillies from Lady Emmeline and Helen McGregor. Both fillies were deservedly awarded first and second prizes. For the best thoroughbred entire the American stallion Gilead, sire St. Saviour, dam Mistake, Avas shown, and he secured a i"cd ribbon, the Morrinsville owned Leolantis, by Leolantis— Atlantis being placed second, and Firearm by Carbine —Hestia third place. Gilead is a fine specimen of the blood horse, and he should got good stock. Judges: Messrs John Heslop and A^ Higgle. Stewards: Messrs H. O. Nolan, F. Dibble, H. Alan Bell, J. Massey, A. Harris, and W. Mclaughlin, jun.

For the best entire calculated to improve the breed of saddle horses and hunters Mr Wm. Taylor's horse Lochinvar, owned in the Waikato, was successful. For filly or gelding, two years, Mr H. Weal, of Waikato, won with Freemanson, a sire by Freedom. The honours for best yearling were carried oft' by Dibble and Butler's Starlight, a good looking roan. .

Lady's Horse, (mare or gelding).— Eight competed. Mr J. R. Martin's Hunkus, ridden by Miss Amy Taylor, was awarded a red ribbon;' Miss K. Lennox's Beauty, ridden by Miss Tanner, being placed second; and Mr E. J. Rae's Pohutakawa, ridden by Miss Race, third. ' Hunkus is an old prize winnejr, having now won (25 first prizes during- his career. SPECIAL CLASSES. Horse (mare, or gelding) suit for cavalry purposes. There was keen competition and a large entry, and the judging took a long time. Mr A. Kidd's Vick was awarded the, red ribbon, with Mr H. Weal's Blaze (a winner, at the Waikato Show) second, and Mr Jas. Taylor's New Chum third.

For walking horsd (mare or geldr ing), up to list, pace, style and action to be, considered, there was a big entry and nlso close competition. Mr A White's Kowhai was awarded first, Mr T. C. Schnacken.berg's Dandy Dick second, and Mr W. Douglas' Black Bess third. HUNTERS. For the £5 prize given by the Pakurangu Hunt Club for the, best three or four-year-old (filly or gelding) suitable for a hunter, bred or owned by a farmer over whose lands the hunt have, permission to run during the season, there were four entries, viz., A. Kenwood's Fitzroy, Cornelius Taylor's Juno, D. Nolan's Larry, 'and A. S. Board's Peter Simple. Theprize was awarded by the judges to Mr Cornelius Taylor's Juno, sire Muskapeer, dam Gipsy Queen.

HARNESS HORSES

(To be shown in harness and driven.)

Entire, most, suitable to improve the breed of light harness horses.—Only C. Waterman's Pleasanton and W. J. Greenwood's La Rue were exhibited, out of five entries. The judge decided for Pleasanton and placed La Rue second. The winner iy a big, stylish horse, with fine action.

Pair of Cab-horses.' —Andrew, Son and Co.'s Alice and Hilda, 1 and special.

DRAUGHT STOCK

Draught stock were present in good numbers, but there was disappointment in the entires, Royal Conqueror and Salisbury's Pride not being shown. The red ribbon for the best, entire was awarded to the Matamata Estate's Red Gauntlet, bred by Mr Matthew Holmes, of Otago. He beat General Gordon, owned by the New Zealand Land Association. General Gordon last year was first and champion at the Auckland show, and firsft and champion at the Waikato Show this year, and first as three-year-old at Waikato Show. Only two entries were shown to-day. For entire three years Mr C. Fitzpatrick won with Champion, a good representative of the class, and the same can be said of Salisbury Yet, who won in the class for entire, two years. '
