Father Matthews asserts that the surrender of the 1500 troops at Nicholson's Nek, under Colonel Carleton, was the only alternative to annlWlation. since the shelling of the position was imminent. . The Boers surrounded three sides of the hill and the fourth was a pre■sipice.
