RAILWAY ACCIDENT AT TIMARU.

A serious accident occurred at Temuka last- night. George McMillan, a well-known farmer, was driving home in a gig with a friend named McArthur. At the level crossing in Temuka he drove into a long train of empty trucks in the dark (8.20 p.m.) Misled by lights that bad passed, he thought the whole train had gone by. The horse is supposed to have shied off. McMillan was thrown under the train, McArthur falling clear. They were found some little time after. McMillan's left leg in mangled, and was amputated above the knee. His condition is critical. McArthur is much shaken, but not supposed to be seriously hurt.
