POLICE COURT.

Messrs F. G. Clayton and Joshua 1 Jackson, J.P.s, presided over the sitting of the Police Court this morning. Charles Adams and Mary Jane Rook § were each fined 10/ for drunkenness, I in default 48 hours, two first offending■ "drunks" 10/ each, and one 5/. I Johanna Barrett was sentenced to ■ three months' hard labour for beingH :an idle and disorderly person, and j Mary Whittingham to one month for wandering abroad to beg alms. A man named William Sherman, employed as a groom at Bowdensstables, was charged with stealing I a purse containing £7 4/, which according to the evidence had been accidentally dropped by a lady while riding in a hansom cab. The cab was : given over to the accused to be washed, and it was shown that next day he was in possession of several pounds. Being arrested on a charge of drunkenness he told the constable that he would find the purse in Bowden's stables, and going thither with the policeman accused produced from behind a rafter a purse bearing the name of the lady who had lost it in the cab. Accused declared that he I picked the purse up in the gutter outside the stable, but the Bench held that a prima facie case had been made -j out, and committed him for trial at the Supreme Court.
