THE AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB MEETING.

There was some sensational racing at Raudwick on the opening day of the Australian Jockey Club Meeting on Saturday. Djin Djin, the winner of the Epsom Handicap, formerly ran in the lilliputian ranks, but she was found good enough to carve out the one mile in lmin 39i}sec, thus beating Bobadil's record of lmin 40 sec, which he put up at Flcmington in the autumn of last year. Other horses in Boolka, Kingfish, Paris, Hungebah, and Delaware also boast a 1.40 record. Previous lo the meeting Djin Djin bad recorded some capital gallops at Randwick, and her victory was well anticipated. Dewey, who unexpectedly triumphed over Cocos and Bobadil at. weight for age, in the Spring Stakes, ran second in the Havvkesbury Spring Handicap recently. As a two-year-old he was only successful in the Randwick Autumn Two-year-old Maiden Stakes. He is owned," trained, and was bred by Mr T. Paytcn, and there will be general satisfaction in Sydney if it is found that the late Hon. .las. White's old trainer has at last got something good in his hands. lie claims an engagement in the Caulfield Cup with 6st 121b, and Melbourne Cup with Cst 81b. Dewey is described as a colt of good size and splendid conformation. Most of the Sydney pressmen and Randwick touts were strong on Cranberry for tlie Derby, and the great majority selected him to win. He is owned by Mr Sam Fielder, who thus wins his first Blue Eibbonship. Cranberry was bred by Mr 11. C. White, of Havilah, X.S.W., and his present owner bought him when a yearling for 330 guineas. In the Hampden Stakes recently he went down before The Chief at weight for age, but afterwards he thrived on the work given him at Randwick. As a two-year-old Cranberry failed to catch the judge's eye, but he is a colt that has been served by time. On Saturday he would no doubt have the services of 'that fine Sydney horseman Frank Fielder. He is engaged in the Victorian Derby and Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Cranberry's tabulated pedigree is as follows: — CRANBERRY. Timoona I Cranbrook Souvenir I Splendour I La Princes- I Chester t-b- v ~ I_Q C f. &. 2 tw | p &\\ ** "S B. _ I » H" g B _%o ~ % a Cremona, who created a surprise yesterday by winning the Metropolitan Handicap, did not race as a two-year-old, and she was only seen out once in the following season. Her only winning efforts at four years were the Club Handicap and Cudgetrong- Handicap at Mudgee December, and the Farewell Handicap at Randwick in May. Cremona is engaged in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, for which she will now require to put up penalties. The three-year-olds Cranberry and Dewey each ran well for so early in the season, and they both engaged in the finish with Cremona. It may be stated that the Metropolitan has no. been a good race for three-year-olds, as since its institution in 1860 only three horses of that age have been returned winners. Lamond was the last to win, and since 1893, when the distance was reduced from two miles to a mile and a-half, three-year-olds have only been placed on two occasions, viz., when Woodford ran second to Nobleman, and Woodlark third to Cravat.
