BOARD OF EDUCATION.

m i. — The ordinary meeting of the Auck« j land Board of Education was held this afternoon, Mr Richard Hobbs presiding. Those present besides the Chairman were Messrs J. Muir, R. Farrell, L. j Bagnall, S. Luke, J. Blades and br* McArthur. Mr Blades took his seat oa the Board for the first time as a newly elected member, and was cordially welcomed by the Chairman and several other members, who expressed < the belief that Mr Blades' presence oa the Board would be a great assistance to the cause of education in this district. Chairman's Report.—The Chairman, in his fortnightly report, stated-that the committee and teacher at Katl. kati North had been informed that Bowentown and No. 1 schools must be taught half time till arrangements fop opening central school are completed. The Wai-o-te-marama Committee had been referred to the provisions of the Act regarding the admission of native children to the school. The schools at Ardmore, Hunua and Maungaturoto had been temporarily closed on. ac> count of the prevalence of measles, etc. The following resignations of teachers had been received: Miss *L. Vellenoweth. assistant Take school; Miss H. J. Walter, assistant, Papakura school; Miss A. B. Finch, ex-pupil teacher. Otorohanga school; Miss C. Aspinall had resigned her junior sehol. arship. The report was adopted. < Teachers' Selection Committee.—. This Committee presented the following- report:—(l) Your Committee recommend that the following appoint, ments should be authorised by the Board: Miss A. M. Crickett. ex-pnpU teacher, from Hamilton to Otorohanga; Miss E. E. Kelly, ex - pupil teacher, from Chapel-street to Matakana; Miss. L. C. McKay, ex - pupil teacher, from Tuakau to Lake; (2) your Committee recommend .that the name of Miss E. A. W. Power, D 3, be submitted to the Papakura School Committee for appointment for assistant teacher, in place of Miss Walter, resigned; (3) your Committee recommend that applications for appointment of ptipil teachers to the Lucas* Creek, Paeroa, and Eichmond Road Schools be deferred till end of quarter; (4) your Committee report that there is no relieving teacher available to act as substitute at Waitekauri School m absence of pupil teacher; (5) your Committee recommend that, owing to the decreased attendance, the Kornata School be closed at 30th. September; (6) your Committee recommend that for the future teachers be not granted leave of absence with salary for a longer period than one week in each year. Some discussion ensued on the lqst clause, in reference to teachers' leave of absence, and it was suggested that the words "unless specially" authorised by the Board" should be added to the clause. Mr Luke raised a protest against the clause in the interests of the teachers, and moved that it be held over for a fortnight for further consideration. This was lost, only Messrs Luke and Blades voting "for it. The report as a whole was then adopted. Standard Examinations.—Consideration of Dr. McArthur's motions re standard examinations, with suggestions received from the-New Zealand Educational Institute and head tetftfti* ers thereon, was postponed till next meeting. Finance Committee.—-The tenort bi the Finance Committee included the following:—Your Committee recommend payment of the following accounts, which have been duly examined and initialled: Board Fund, nineteen Touchers, amounting1 to £1026 10/10; Building Fund, thirteen vouchers, amounting to £387 19/10. Your Committee recommend that the selection of designs for scholarship certificates be deferred till next year. The report was adopted. New Readers.—A letter from Messrs Collins Bros., with copies of Graphic Geographical Readers, was Tead. The books were referred to the Chief In~ spector. r ■ ;■■•'■ ; Under-paid Teachers.—Dr. McArihnr raised the question of some teachers in, small places who got insufficient salaries, and instanced the case of a. married man, a teacher under the Board, getting only £80 a year, owing; to the decrease in the population of the locality.—Mr Muir said it would come to this some day—that teachers would have to have a fixed salary.— The Chairman explained that in the course of events certain localities dwindled down in the matter of population, and consequently the attendance of children, but how were the. Board to help it?— The further consideration of the matter was adjourned for a fortnight. ,
