AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB SPRING MEETING.
The curtain rises on the four days' racing of the Australian Jockey Club Meeting at Randwick on Saturday next. On the opening day the contest for the Derby and the Epsom Handicap will take place. The last forfeit for the Derby is due tomorrow, and the field is likely to come from the following:— A.J.C. DERBY. (To start at 2.50 p.m.) A sweepstake of 30sovs each, 5 ft, with 500sovs added. For three-year-olds. Colts, 8.10; fillies, 8.5; geldings allowed 31b. Hon. W. A. Long's b c Parthian, by Grand Flaneur—Archeress. Mr F. Fielder's eh c Cranberry, by Cranbrook —Tiwoona. Mr T. Peyten's eh c Dewey, by Lochie'i —Dona. MrW.R. Hall's b c Reviver, by Clan Stuart (imp)—Melissa. M* H. C. White's br c St. Clare, by Cranbrook —Clare.
Mr W. Forester's br c Sirdar, by Splendor (imp)—Ellerdale.
Mr T. Lamond's br f Condiment, by
Gossoon (imp)— Cinnamon. Mr C. M. Lloyd's b c Promontory, by Bill of Portland (imp)—Montalto.
There is material in the race for an exciting contest, Parthian, Reviver and Promontory being the best performed. Probably Parthian will win the coveted honour.
The Epsom Handicap field contains much material for a surprise. A gelding named Superb, trained by I. Earnshaw, with 7.11 opposite his name, is a strong fancy for the event. The ever-dangerous Kelso stable have Dandy to represent them. He only has 6.12 to carry. The Watchdog (bjGibraltar—Rose Flaneur) owned by Mr W. Forester, and Severity are also prime fancies.
