BOROUGH MEETINGS.

NEWMARKET.

The fortnightly meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr T. W. La.xon, presided, and Crs. Angus, McColl, Smerdon Edgerley, Laurie, Lee and Whyman were present. Park Avenue. —Mr J. Lawson complained of the disgraceful condition of Park Avenue. —Cr. Whyman considered the trees in the road caused the trouble. It would be useless to curb and channel the street unless the trees were cut down. —The Mayor stated that the residents of the street objected to the felling of the trees, and it was decided to clear the streets and channels. Eden-street, —Mr Smethurst requested the Council to kerb a portion of Eden-street opposite his property. He offered to provide the stones and half the labour.—lt was decided to undertake, the work. Water Supply—The turncock reported that the water consumed during the past quarter had been 2,689,000 gallons, 1,390,000 gallons being by meter, and 1,299,000 gallons by domestic supply. For the corresponding quarter last year 2,464,000 gallons had been consumed. Finance.—General accounts amoumino- to £56 13/10, and water accounts amounting to £147 3/6, were passed for payment. Foreman of Works Report.—The Foreman of Works recommended the procuring of 100 yards of broken metal. He also reported that stones from a wall in front of a property in Kvber Pass were being thrown on the footpath. It was decided to draw the attention of the police to the maiter. Retiring Members.—The Mayor referred to the fact that it was the last evening on which Crs. Lee and Angus* would be present, and moved a vote of thanks to them for past ™™c^-~ Mr Whyman seconded the motion, ana his regret at their leaving. The motion was carried and the retiring members returned thanks.

PARNELL

The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held^ last evening There were present: Mr H. Campbell (the Mayor) and Crs. John Mowbray, Geo. Cozens, B. S. Biigg* J. McCabe, B. Fitt, A. P. Friend, J. Petf°Charitable Aid.-The Secretary to the Treasury wrote from Wellington hat the "Sim of £46 17/6 being am ount of subsidy on rates collected 1898-9 had been retained by the Treasurer in part payment of the sum of £265 19/ Recoverable from the^Council in respect of amount due to the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid JkStJ^& B. B- ="* -Te that he proposed to address a public meeting in Parnell on the municipal ownership of tramways, and he asked what night would suit the councilors to bf present. The letter was received, Mr Hunt to fix Ms own night. Mre' Brigade.-The Legal and Finance Committee recommended that the firemen be insured against accident for £100 each. Cr Briggs said he understood that the firemen had some accident fund among themselves and it was agreed to defer the matter for future consideration. Loan.—On the recommendation of the Finance and Legal Committee it was agreed to call for tenders for the loan for the drainage scheme. Ayr-street.-The Foreman of Works reported that some parts of AyrSrSt were dangerous. He would like the Bemuera Road Board to supply scoria for the road as soon as possible. tZ report was adopted, and it was aoreed to forward a copy of the report to the Bemuera Board. Foreman of Works Report, Ihe Foreman of Works reported that since last meeting footpaths had been formed in Clyde and Stratford-streets, and in Crescent Koad, channels cessnits and miscellaneous work had al&o been done. The cost of work done m Crescent Eoad was within the estimate. AdA?counis.-General accounts were passed to the amount, of £38 1/, and for water supply £154 9/8. Ifie Mayor said that during the last halfyear there had been a saving of £50 in the water supply account, Brighton Boad.—The question of +>m state of Brighton Road was referred to the sfreete Committee to Ground.—On the motion of Cr. Petford it was decided to remove the pound and store it in the Council's yaßooms.-The question of booms being constructednearSt.Georgesßay Eoad was brought up by Cr. TO "J he favoured protesting against the same. Cr. Friend thought it would hamper drainage arrangements. The yachtsmen were also upset at the ioonfs being at the bay. It was re-solved:-"That the attention of the Council having been drawn to*oß Proposal to construct booms in St, George's Bay requests the representative Sf the Council on the Harbour Board to oppose the same and to keep the Council advised of any further proposals on the matter.
