THE PACIFIC CABLE.

The Postmaster-General, in an interview, said if the present developments on the Pacific Cable question are based on the old arrangement, the Governments would be compelled to construct the cable in duplicate to prevent their being at the mercy of the Eastern Extension Company, and it would probably take four or five years to construct the duplicate cable.
Meantime, they must make some arrangement with the Eastern Company, whose agreement expires in April next. His opinion on the representation on the committee was that the whole committee should consist of nine members, Australia being represented in proportion of four to five. Under the present proposal, New Zealand would have representation equal to about one-third, whilst her stake is not nearly as great as that of New South Wales.
He estimates that the rate to be profitable would have to be 4/6 per word.
