IMPORTANT MINING CASE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, this day. An important mining case .was heart before Warden Stratford .and five assessors at Lawrence to-day. It was Samuel Johnston and William j Goldsriiit. versus Smythe arid party, j and was a suit to declare a special claim of 72 acres at Weatherstone forj feited for an alleged breach of the | labour conditions. .One of the ques.l tions raised was: Can a dredging claim j be amalgamated with a sluicing claim' j in order to get rid of the onerous labI our burden imposed on hydraulic ' shiicers by" the- existing law. The | Court imposed a fine of £50 and, costs ! in lieu of forfeiture, because the claim • could not have" been remuneratively worked by employing a greater number of men with trie . water/ they commanded, that- the ground, having been worked previously and parts reworked, they did not -think Smythe's party would have been warranted in. bringing, in water at a very great outlay since.the ground had only yielded from £3 to £6 per man weekly. :.
