ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

— ■* The fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night. There were present Dr. Erson (Mayor), Messrs Hill, Laking, Colledge, Fleming, Stoupe, McLeod and Bradley. More Light.—The Council resolved, on the recommendation of the Streets Committee, to agree to the terms ofthe Auckland Gas Company to fit 13 street lamps with incandescent burners. Many complaints having been heard of the quality of gas supplied at Onehunga, it was decided to bring this matter under the notice of tho Gas Company. Street Improvement. —Captain Neale wrote asking the Council to make a footpath in Norman's Hill Road, and. also to provide it with street lamps. On the motion of the Mayor the letter was received, and the Streets Committee were instructed to bring up a report as to the- necessity for more street lamps. . . Street Enclosure.—Mrs Caven wrote objecting to permission being given to the Tramway Company to enclose a blind street near her property. It was resolved to forward her a copy of the agreement between the Council and the said company on the matter. Water Charges.—Mr E. Creighton applied for a. refund of £1 2s 6d paid by him for laying the water on to his property in Church-street. Since paying the above sum. he had found that the connection had been made at the request of and paid for by the former owner of the property. He therefore asked that the above sum be refunded. The letter was referred to the Water Committee to consider and report. '. Block House.—The Rev. Mr Wylie, lessee of the Block House, asked the Council to effect certain necessary repairs, which were badly needed, owing to the-depredations of some person or persons unknown. The Mayor moved arid it was agreed that the Reserves Committee be empowered, to expend the sum of £1 in repairing the Block House. Tenders.—Two -tenders were received for day carting, and W. Bray's was accepted. It was resolved not to accept T. G. Bray's tender (£l9) for forming a footpath in Grey-st. Two tenders were received for forming a footpath in Mt. Smart Road, from Upper Queen-st. to Victoria-st., Viz.: T. Foster £15 10/ and J. Ramsbottom £14. On the motion of Mr Bradley both tenders were declined. Finance.—The treasurer's statement is as follows:—General account: Dr., £72 13/2; water account., cr., £270 11/3; recreation, account, £41 11/1; contractors' deposit account, £25 14/; domain account, dr. £5 14/7. The sum of £71 16/4 was passed for payment to the Charitable Aid Board. Damage by Flood.—The K.T. Company wrote complaining of the damage done to their mill by surface water from Princess-st. The letter was refered to the Streets Committee with power to act. \ Petition.—Mr Laking presented- a petition from residents in Symondsst. praying that a footpath be formed in that street from the Royal Oak Hotel to Captain Daveny's corner. It was ordered to lie on the table for a fortnight. Inspector's Report—The (Borough Inspector, J. Hewitt, reported the growth of a poisonous shrub on the Mt. Smart reserve, ahd also that a number of trees recently planted on the recreation reserve were missing. The' Reserves Committee were asked to see into the matter. Mangere Bridge—Mr Fleming moved"That the Government be requested through Sir G. M. O'Rorke to fulfil their promise to set up a committee to consider the allocation pi the cost of maintaining Mangere bridge." He said the Government had made tha above promise in answer to a petition from the Council praying for relief in .the great burden to Onehunga of keeping the bridge in repair.—The motion was agreed to. - Water Supply.—The Parnell Borough Council wrote claiming to be considered in any agreement which may be made for supplying the adjacent districts with water. The proprietors of Sutherland's tannery also wrote stating that. they would hoM the Council liable for .any damage they may suffer through . water .'-.being drawn away . from their tannery springs, as they had established their right to water from long continued use. Both communications were referred to the Water Committee to consider and report. Postal Requirements.—Mr McLeod moved and it was agreed, "That a committee consisting of the Mayor, and Messrs Bradley, Stoupe, Fleming and the mover be set up to consider what best can be done to obtain improved postal facilities in Onehunga. - ' _i '
