THE GILBERT GROUP.
A severe drought has caused great distress among the islanders in the Gilbert Group. The steamer Emu, running under the auspices of the Pacific Islands Company, arrived at Sydney from the Group last week, and .Captain Wavish, when seen, stated that all the islands south of Apiang were s-uffering from the drought. The dry weather had resulted in the destruction of the cocoanut and fruit trees, arid the natives were enduring great privations owing to the scarcity of food. "Unless rain falls soon," said Captain Wavish, "many of the native inhabitants must succumb, as when' my vessel called . there, they were .in terrible straits." Hurricane weather and tidal waves had swept over the Howland, Sydney, Baker, and Hull Islands, playing havoc with the native villages, and"" causing great losses. The Emu found trade very indifferent and returned here with only part of her cargo space taken up.
