THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT

THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.

BYE-ELECTIONS

LONDON, July 7.

The House of Commons acquiesced in the House of Lords' rejection from the London Government Bill of the provision allowing women to become aldermen and councillors.

Sir John Austin resigned his seat in the House of Commons for the Os"-oldeross division of Yorkshire as a protest against local veto, and was xe-elected, defeating the vetoist candidate by a large majority. The election for the two vacant seats at Oldham resulted in the return of Messrs Emmot and Runciman, Radicals, by a majority of 1410 over Lieutenant Winston L. S. Churchill and Mr Mawdsley, the Conservatives.
