adjourned to the saloon of the vessel,where the healths of the owner and of the builders were honoured. A speed of 7* knots per hour was maintained ou the ruu, and the engine worked splendidly throughout. The Hercules Gasoline Engine Company, of San Francisco, .supplied the engine through their local agents, Messrs: E. Porter and Co. It is of the latest type, the principal improvement being in the exhaust,' which comes direct from the cylinder instead of through a separate chamber. On the break .teat 4!) horse-power was registered. An air jacket is placed round the exhaust pipe, preventing the generation of heat. a number of Hercules engines have now been fitted into vessels trading on these coasts, the largest being the Toroa and Hercules. A schooner similar to tho Broturers is now being constructed by Messrs Lane and Brown for Saraoan owners, and this will also be supplied with a Hercules engine of 30 horse-power.
