' The German Consul has furnished us with the following return of German goods exported direct to Australasia from Germany in the year 1897:—Cotton goods, £112,100; brushware, £18,150; drugs and chemicals, £92,700; iron and ironware, £358,000; cement, £47,350; glass and glassware, £26,550; woodware, £65,900; hops, £12,800; instruments and machinery, £287,650; wearing apparel, £25,650; copperware, £30,100; fancy goods. £77,950; leather and ieatherware, £47,350; articles of art, £25,000; beer, sugar, cigajrs, £104,950; paper and paperware, '£35,650; silks, £16,800; earthenware, £40,650; woollen goods, £56,950; sundries, £82,450. Total, £1,564,700.
The value of Australasian produce imported direct into Germany in 1897 was as follows: —Ores and precious metals, £478,000; copper, £13,100; tin, £5,600; precious stones, £51,950; coal, £6,550; gums, £59,300; timber and bark, £28,850; agricultural produce, £5,350; wool, £3,420.950; hides and skins, £115,150; leather, £5,050; tallow, £69,800; gilts, £5,050; butter, meat and meat extract, £9,400;, ,05p
