CUSTOMS DUTIES.
A return of the cost of collecting Customs and other revenue by the Customs Department at each port of entry for the year ended 31st March, 1899, shows that the total amount collected was £2,123,110, of which £1,965,008 was Customs duty; £76,213 beer duty; £14,818 gold duty; £19,383 light dues; £35,922 pilotage and port charges.
The cost of collecting at the four i ; principal ports was: Auckland, £1.77 i per cent; Wellington, £1.55; Lyttelton and Christchurch, £1.99; Dunedin and Port Chalmers, £1.85. The cost at Picton was £ 6 15/11. The cost of collection, calculated on the gross revenue, amounted to" £1 10/2 per cent., compared with £ 1 10/7 for the previous year. The following amounts were collected at each port:
