THE ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN
DEPUTATION TO MR RICHARD
HOBBS
A number of friends met Mr Richard llobbs yesterday afternoon at the Chamber of .Mines. Mr A. J. Entrictin was called upon to take the chair. There was a good attendance, and the meeting was unanimous on the advisability' of getting' a strongly signed requisition asking- Mr llobbs to con-' test one of the seats for this city at the approaching1 general election. Mr llobbs staled that he had nothing to gain by acceding to such a request, but he would regard it as a call of duty to come forward at the present juncture if the electors should .show any enthusiasm in the matter, and on his part he pledged himself to derote his best energies to the welfare of the city and the people. The following form of requisition was unanimously approved: "To Richard Hobbs, Esq.-— Sir. —We. the undersigned electors of Hie City of Auckland, do hereby respectfully request you to allow yourself to be nominated for the impending election as a candidate for the representation of the city in Parliament. We have in mind (i) That you have shown more than ordinary business capacity in the successful conduct of your own affairs. (2) That you are a native of the colony, and having lived here all your life are thoroughly well acquainted with its past history and development, and therefore well fitted to judge of its future requirements. (3) That you have had a useful and varied experience of public life, having served with credit, to yourself on numerous local bodies, and also with distinction in three Parliaments of the House of Representatives. (4) That you hold strong views upon the necessity of compelling the Government of the day to do justice to this city and district in respect to railway communication with the rest of the colony: that you have been earnest in endeavouring to preserve to our port the San Francisco service, and have always urged the opening and settlement of the native lands of the province. For these and many other reasons we conclude that you would make a capable and honest representative for the city, and we therefore pledge ourselves, if 3'ou consent to nomination, to use all.our efforts for your successful return." All those persons present agreed to take a copy of the above and obtain signatures. Any person wishing to sign tne requisition can now do so by calling at the : office of Mr 6. J. Garland, No. 6, i Coombes' Arcade, Queen-st.
