TREATMENT OF THE NATIVES.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—At a recent meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Mr Monk stated that "Government having a monopoly in buying native lands dealt inequitably with the natives, giving from 4/ to 7/6 for land for which the natives could easily get from 15/ to £2 from private individuals. ' If that statement is correct, the Government arc worse than highway robbers. Would the Government dare pass an edict by the so-called "Governor-in-Council" authorising the Government to be the sole purchasers of grain for export at a price, say 6d per bushel less than the market value thereof? No, they durst not, although the oases are analogous. Such treatment of the native landowners is Bimplv scandalous; while the Government are buying large estates in the South at fabulous prices, they are shutting up large areas of good land in the North simply because the natives decline to allow themselves to be robbed in such a barefaced, shameless manner.—l am, etc.,
