WAIUKU NEWS.
A SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
WAIUKU, June 17.
An accident of a very serious nature occurred here last week by which a young- man named Walter Smith had a narrow escape of losing his life. Smith was mounting a young horse when he was thrown violently to the ground, his head striking a , puriri mounting block, the blow completely stunning him. Dr. Clouston was at once sent for and pronounced him to be in. a very serious condition. A few days later his mother, Mrs Thomas Smith, who had been his only nurse, was seized by a paralytic stroke, from the effects; of which, I believe, there is very little hope of recovery. Great sympathy is felt throughout the district for Mr T. Smith, several of the neighbours showing it by giving every assistance possible in nursing the sick. The son, I understand, is recovering slowly, his mother's critical state having a bad effect on him.
Messrs Hunter and Nolan's sale at Waiuku on June 17 was small, being principally dairy cows. There was a good demand for good animals.
Several farms have changed hands here within the past few weeks, all at .advanced prices. The demand for swamp land here is very great..
