TRAGEDY AT KAWAKAWA.
MAORI SHOOTS HIS WIFE
AND TAKES TO THE BUSH.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
KAWAKAWA, this day.
Some natives from Kaka's Camp came, into Kawakawa to-day with the news that a native named Wiki Moeanu had shot his wife, and then
escaped into the bush. Wiki is believed to be out of his mind, and as he is probably armed it is expected that he will make a determined resistance to avoid capture.
Wiki Moeanu lived at Halfway Creek with his wife and family, and the news of % the murder was brought to Kaka's Camp by his children.
Constable Sheehan, of Kawakawa, upon hearing the news, at once left for the scene of the tragedy. Some of the Maoris are also out searching for Moeanu. The natives say that he had previously threatened to shoot his wife, but they had regarded it as a joke.
Wiki is well known in the district. He has always been found to be quiet and sociable. It is stated that he was jealous of his wife and had threatened to shoot seven natives with whom he had a grudge.
Constable Keep has gone, with Constable Sheehan, to the scene of the supposed murder, a native settlement about, eight miles from Kawakawa, near the line of the Ramarama river.
