At the Harbour Board meeting Mr Cliff gave notice to move at the next meeting that the Board take the necessary steps to have a Bill passed during the coming session of Parliament to enable the Board to borrow £200,000 for harbour improvements. INVERCARGILL, this day.

In the Supreme Court a jury gave a verdict for plaintiff for £300 in the action Golding v. Wallace County, for compensation for injuries caused by a horse shying at timber on the roadside for the repair of a culvert.

At the annual meeting of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists, there was a large attendance. The report showed a balance in hand of £28 9/6, liabilities about £9. Mr J. A shocking case of juvenile depravity was. disclosed at the Supreme Court. Jeremiah John Keene, an elderly man, was convicted of carnally knowing a girl of 13. Other charges, involving two younger girls, were . withdrawn by the Crown Prosecutor. Keene was sentenced to five years with hard labour. Three young- men, George Hamilton Browne, James Newbury, and . Thomas McLauchlan, pleaded guilty to forging and uttering cheques. The first was released on probation, McLauchlan, who was on probation a similar offence when the crime was committed, was sentenced to two years. He is a welleducated young man, from Dunedin. George Ernest Webber was sentenced to imprisonment for one year for breaking, entering and stealing.
