NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last evening", there being in attendance Mr J. W. Shackeliord (the Mayor),1 and Crs. Sexton, Brinsden, Farrell, Stewart, Ambury, Smith and Donald.

Surface Boxes.—Messrs E. Porter and Co. wrote in compliance with the Council's wishes they had instructed Mr Proud to cast the boxes required. They would submit a sample for approval.—The Mayor said* the sample had been forwarded and it was quite satisfactory.—llecei ved.

Water Pipes.—Messrs E. Porter and Co. advised that the pipes for the Council had arrived at Dunedin in the Southesk from Glasgow. — Eeceived.

Northeoite-street.r—Mr Jas. K&deliffe drew attention to the entrance to Northcote-st. from the Great North Road. The small box there would not take the storm water aoid it flowed down over his property. —Referred to the Streets Committee.

Surrey-street.—Mr J. Thornes asked that the paths receive attention in the matter of scoria or metal waste.— It was resolved on the motion of the Mayor that the work be done.

Incandescent Burners. —The. secretary of the Auckland Gas Company wrote intimating that they would place incandescent burners in the lamps in the Borough.—Received.

Leighton-street.—Mr W. F. J. Ilavertield asked the Council to form the footpath and lay scoria down to his house.—lt was agreed to repiy that the work Inid already been passed to be done.

Drainage—Messrs A. Clark and Sons wrote that they now consented to pay the whole cost of diverting1 the drains on their allotment where a factory is about to be erected. At the same time they pointed out that diverting the drain was of more advantage to the Council than to the firm.—The Counsel agreed that the work be proceeded with at once on the lines suggested by Messrs A. Clark and Sons' engineer, and at their exnense.

Overseer. —Mr Chas. Smith applied to test and take delivery of the new water pipes in the Borough, and to lay or superintend the laying of the same. lie would require wages of £3 per week. —The Mayor and several Councillors spoke highly of Mr Smith's ability.—lt was agreed to engage Mr Smith at a salary of £3 per week to receive the pipes on arrival and to superintend the work of laying the pipes.

Accounts. —Accounts amounting to £105 9/11 were passed for payment.

Wages.—lt Avas agreed that the wages of Mr J. Sadgrove, a Council employee, be raised to 8/ per day.

Foreman of Works Report. —This report stated that several new houses had been connected with the main drain, and a number of footpaths had been repaired with scoria and the channel cleaned. The Sackville-st. bridge was in a dangerous state. During the recent heavy rain on June 10 the buttment of the bridge gave way and carried a portion of the road with it. He had temporarily repaired the damage done. —The matter of the repair of the bridge was referred to the Streets Committee to report. The remainder of the report was adopted. Friendly Suit at Court.—The Arch Hill Board intimated that they were willing to agree to the Council's request that the conduct of the case regarding the maintenance of Great North Road be left in the hands of the Council's Town Clerk and the Board's Secretary.—The letter was received, the Mayor remarking he thought the parties ought to be represented by solicitors.

Miscellaneous. —Messrs Young and Waddingham waited on the Council. They asked for repairs in Surrey and Sussex streets, which the Council acceded to. It was decided to refer to the Streets Committee to report the matter of improving the condition of the streets on the Great North Road from Pollen-st. to Beaconsfield-st. It was stated the City Engineer had promised to have. Cox's Greek bridge, damaged by the heavy rains, repaired at once.
