SYDNEY, June IS.
- The Perthshire, in. tow of the s.s. Talune, was sighted off Newcastle tonight. She is coming on to Sydney, and is expected to arrive early to-morrow morning. A tug which went out from Newcastle reports all well. The Talune picked up the Perthshire on Tuesday last oil" Norfolk Island. SUNDAY NIGHT. Great excitement prevailed in Newcastle when the. Perthshire was first sighted, and the <.'lifFs were lined with spectators with glasses.
The captain of the Perthshire informed the tug- that he required no further assistance, the Talune being sufficient.
The steamers were coming along dead slow, so as not to make Sydney before daylight.
The Perthshire is being tugged with her own chain cable.
It has been ascertained that the shaft did not break in the tube. The engineer endeavoured to repair the damage by means of coupling, but this method was not strong enough to stand the strain. ! No further details are available tonight. SYDNEY, June 17. The ship Yerajean has arrived at Newcastle. She spoke the Perthshire on June 7, in lat. 29.38 S., long. 1(55.1 E., all well. A strong north to north-west gale was blowing with heavy cross-seas. i After leaving the sLearner the Yerajean spoke the French steamer La Perouse, bound from Sydney to Noui mea, and reported the Perthshire's j position to the captain. The Verajean spoke the La Perouse five days later than the date on •which she spoke the Perthshire.
