LONDON, June 15
When • the last message was despatched the Australians in their first innings had 3 wickets down for 59, Hill being not out with IT.
The young South Australian, who has so often risen to the occasion when runs were badly wanted, did so once more in this match. He and Noble (who joined Hill after Gregory's dismissal) batted for the rest of the afternoon, and when stumps were drawn for the day had raised the score from 59 to 156. To this total j Hill had contributed 72 and Noble 42. j Frequent changes of bowling were tried, in the hope of dissolving the partnership, but all without avail. Jackson, Rhode!; and Mead were tried with the ball before the score had reached SO, and Jackson went on again at 97, with Townsend. At 123 j Rhodes replaced Jackson, and four . runs later Ranjitsinhji himself too.-c a hand at the bowling, Mead replacing Townsend. At 139 Jessop displaced Mead, and Hayward and Rhodes took up the bowling at 146.
By these rapid changes of bowling the Englishmen had hoped to prevent the batsmen getting properly set. As it happened, however, the changes had no effect upon either batsman.
The English lost a chance of getting rid of Hill at the beginning of his innings, a miss which cost them dear. He stepped out to drive a ball, but missed, and Lilley, behind the wickets, failed to take the ball. At that time Hill had only scored a single. Noble began quietly. When he was 19 he survived a confident appeal for leg-before.
The English fielding was excellent and saved many runs.
