NEW SCHOONER GREYHOUND.
Messrs H. Subritzky and Sons' new auxiliary schooner Greyhound arrived from Whangaroa this morning. The vessel was built by Messrs Lane and Brown, shipbuilders, of Whangaroa, and has come doAvn to Auckland to have the engines fitted. She is considerably larger that the Medora, owned by the same firm, and is of about 98 tons. She has not yet been measured for registration, and her dimensions are not knoAvn. She is a handsome strong looking vessel, and is built of kauri, with hardwood knees and floors. She is copper fastened throughout, and is built on the diagonal principle, with -three skins. The hull is coppered up to" the Avater line, and is painted black, with white ribbon. The hold provides accommodation for about 150 tons of cargo, and is provided Avith a large hatchway. An oil engine is used for loading and discharging cargo. The vessel has two masts fitted Avith topmasts, and carries a large spread of canvas. She is considered to be the finest boat which Messrs Lane and Brown have turned out.
_ Passenger accommodation is provided for 25 persons, and there is a ladies cabin capable of accommodating 6 persons. The Greyhound Avill carry a crew of about six men, their berths being in the forecastle in the bow. .
The engine is of GO horsepower, and Avas made by the Union Oil Engine Company, qi, San Francisco. It will be fitted at once by Messrs W. A. Ryan and Co., and a trial trip will then be made. Messrs Subritzky intend to run a weekly service to the north with the Medora and the Greyhound.
The schooner Toroa, which has been running in conjunction with the Medora, has been sold, and will in future trade on the west coast of the South Island. She is now having her hatchways enlarged at Whangaroa, and will come down to Auckland to load for Westport.
