TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES PICNIC.
The annual picnic given to the Auckland tramway employees was held at Potter's Paddock yesterday,, and was largely attended. Messrs Kidd,. Heaney, Potter, Harris, Dickson, Martelli, Lisaght, Cornish, West, and Richardson were the general committee. .Mr Kidd acted as starter, Messrs Heaney -and Potter as handicappers, Messrs Corney and Richardson as' judges, and Mr Lysaght was secretary and treasurer. The committee which caried out the ladies events were: Messrs Martelli, West, Harris, Mrs Kidd, Heaney, and Pascoel A varied programme of races took plaice. A large number of valuable prizes were-kindly donated for the races, including a guinea by the Gaiety Company, a guinea by Mr Walters, of the Epsom Hotel; a guinea by the Accident Insurance Company; a similar sum by Mr Neilson, of Onehunga, and a ton of coal by Mr Craig. The Northern Roller Mills gave 15 sacks of flour as a prize. The 100 yds race for drivers was won by B. Johnson; the 100 yds race for grooms by E. Bilby; and the boys' race was won by J. Kennedy. The 200 yds tramway handicap' was won by Edward Bach, the 150 yds hurdles by G. Hammond, the running bop-step-and-jump and hig jump both by R. Moore. A novel item was a greasy ping hunt. The various races ;for ladies were won by Mrs Walsh (who secured the ton of coal), Mrs Fulsher, Mrs Sherry, Mrs Platt, Mrs MeGtiire, Miss Brigham, Mrs Corney, and Mrs Diekson, the .last-named lady winning a silver cruet. After the races were over a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Kidd, through Mr Cqrney, for his kindness, and Mr Lysaght thanked the ladies for their kind assitance. The proceedings wound up with a short concert in the grandstand in the evening. The prize for .the best singer was won by Mr '■ Harrop. Mr Kidd, at the conclusion of the proceedings, in a neat speech, expressed the hope that all had enjoyed themselves, and that they would all meet again next year at a similar gathering.
