j. INDESCRIBABLE TORTURE OF A i BELGIAN MISSIONARY.
" Details of the murder of Father Victorin, a Belgian priest, at Shihkushan, ]00 miles from Ichang, a month ago. are of a revolting character. The rioters, after beateing him, stripped him naked and tied him to a tree, where he was cut and burnt and subjected to indescribable mutilation, his torturers indulging in a sort of cannibalism. The remains were left exposed to public view in a Chinese temple. They are now enclosed in a cofiin.
FatherVictorin,who has been atrociously tortured and killed by Chinese rebels in Hupeh, was in civil life Joseph Deltirouck. He was born in 1870, near Liege, and became a priest in 1894,
After a short period as professor in a college at Lokeren in Flanders, heleft for China in ]596 'with Monsignor Christiaens, vicar apostolic of the Hupeh Mission. This mission which is worked by eleven Belgian priests, assisted by two Chinese priests and four Belgian novices, counts 51% on its lists. It possessed several churches which have been burnt by the rebels.
Ichang is a treaty port in the province of Hupeh on the Yangtse, about 105 miles west of Hankow.
