FIRE ON THE INDRAMAYO.
Mr Alexander Rose, Collector of Customs, has held an inquiry into the cause of the fire which occurred on board the Indramayo on Tuesday morning last. The trend of the evidence showed clearly that the fire was not due to carelessness, spontaneous combustion, or rats, and that the captain and officers were in no way to blame. On the night of the fire a heavy confused sea was running, and the • ship rolled and pitched a great deal. During the night a couple of tanks containing merchandise, got adrift, and it is considered by the witnesses that one of these crashed into a case of matches, a number of which were'stored in the hold, and caused the matches to ignite. The evidence showed that the fire started in the fore part of the tween decks, in number one hold. The Collector of Customs will forward the evidence adduced together with his opinion, to the Minister of Marine, and probably no further action will be taken, in the matter.
