THE LATEST.

OFFER OF VOLUNTEERS AC-

CEPTED.

FORCE OF FOUR HUNDRED

THE TUTANEKAI TO SAIL TO-

MORROW

H.M.S. MILDURA FOR SAMOA.

Much excitement was occasioned the volunteer encampment about noon to-day when it became known that a telegram had been received from the Premier accepting the proffered services of the No. 1 Battalion for Samoa. Major Murray received a telegram during the day from the Government stating that the services of the Battalion had been accepted, and the volunteers were thereupon . ordered to be in readiness. The.two infantry battalions at the time of the receipt of the news were out skirmishing lfi. the adjoining fields and around Remuera, but were suddenly recalled, and the regular work of the camp came to a standstill. The Battalion on returning to the parade ground was addressed by Major Murray, who announced the news. The enlisting of volunteers for Samoa was then commenced. It was announced that the Government wanted 400 men, but this is presumed to include the Permanent Force as well. The Permanent Force members who were incamp at Epsom were recalled, and left the camp at once for the North Shore. It was stated that the Government steamer Tutanekai was expected to leave here, at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, and that a portion of the force woxild be conveyed to Samoa by her (should the Imperial Govern^ ment accept the Premier's offer), and the rest by.H.M.s. Mildura. Those who gave in their names were therefore warned to be in readiness to leave for Samoa to-morrow if so ordered.

The -Permanent Force at the North Head are also in readiness awaitingorders.

H.M.S. Mildura, at present in Auck-land-Harbour, is in readiness to lenv'e at any time for Samoa;, and all leave has been refused to her crew.
