WASHINGTON, March 31
The officials here were startled at the suddenness of the fighting at Apia, but siipport Admiral Kautz.
It is believed in official circles in Washing-ton that an.intercolonial rupture will be avoided in Samoa.
BERLIN, March 31
The Berlin press maintains a calm tone regarding affairs in Jamoa, and expresses regret at the bombardment It is unable to understand the necessity for it, and declares the German Consul :was ordered to support the Provisional Government no further than the other Consuls.
The commander of the German warship Falke has been ordered* to abBtain from any active movement.
LONDON, March 30
The Daily Chronicle says Germany must recall its Consul from Samoa or quit the protectorate. The Standard anticipates the An-glo-American action will be endorsed by the respective Governments and hopes the same view will be taken in Berlin.
SYDNEY, March 31
When the Taviuni arrived at Suva, on the 22nd, she delivered a letter from the captain of the Porpoise to Captain Stuart, of H.M.S. Tauranga, on the strength of which the latter determined to proceed to the seat of war, and left the same night, with provisions, water, coal, and ammunition. Captain Stuart, on arrival in Samoa, will be senior British officer there, and on him will bevolve the responsibility of carrying out the British policy. WELLINGTON, Friday.
The steamer Pukaki left Wellington on Friday for Westtport to load coal for the British warships at" Samoa, It is probable that H.M.s. Mildurawill be ordered to Apia, to supportkthe British %nd American warships already there.
