NGARUAWAHIA. At the Ngaruawahla Court on Monday, before Captain Jackson, S.M., and Mr R. Rathbone, J.P., Wm. Vaut, of Ngaruawahla wheelwright, was charged by Elizabeth Fitzpatrick with feeing the putative father of an illegitimate European female child named Rose Fitzpatrick born 15th October, 189S, of which the said Elizabeth Fitzpatrick was the mother, and having neglected to provide for its maintenance. Dr. Laishley had been specially engaged, and came from Auckland for the purpose of appearing for Mr Vaut, and pleaded not guilty on his behalf. The complainant, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, appeared in person, and applied for an adjournment of the case on the ground that her witnesses were not present. Dr. Laishley opposed the application on several grounds, one of which was that the complaint was laid even so far back as 4th February, and therefore ample time had elapsed wherein to procure them. Ultimately the Bench allowed the case to be withdrawn by the complainant. In the course of the case Dr. Laishley said his client denounced the application as utterly baseless, and he so greatly courted a thorough investigation that he actually subpoenaed the complainant as a witness, for fear she would not attend as complainant. The proceedings aroused considerable interest in Ngaruawahla and the surrounding district, in conseauence of Mr Vaut being well known, and havi ing been highly respected there for Taany years,.
