ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night. There were present Messrs W. R. Erson (Mayor), Rowe, Colledge, Hill, Fleming, Laking, McLeod, Shaldrick, and Stoupe. Water Supply.—The Mayor reported that negotiations with the Manukau Water Supply Board had fallen through, as the latter body could not see its way to agree to take 50,000,000 gallons of water per annum to start with, and Onehunga required to supply that quantity in order to meet the annual expenditure. He had conferred with Mr D. Goldie, the Mayor of Auckland, and as the latter gentleman expressed a desire that Onehunga should submit terms for supplying the Auckland City with water, he moved the following resolution:—lst. That the Auckland City Council be informed that Messrs Boylan and Metcalfe, civil engineers, estimated the daily overflow of the Onehunga springs at the driest season of the year to be 1,870,000 gallons per diem* 2nd. That the Onehunga Borough Council will be prepared to allow the City Council of Auckland to make use of the overflow on the following conditions: Ist. That the Auckland City Council erect their own pumping- plant and be allowed to connect together any such springs required to the collecting pond at their own expense; 2nd. That the Auckland City Council repair any damage to the roads of Onehunga occasioned by laying their mains; 3rd. That the Auckland City Council connect their main with, the present reservoir of One*hunga and supply to that reservoir all water required by the borough. 4th. That the Auckland City Council pay to the Borough of Onehunga one penny per 1,000 gallons for all water they may consume. sth. That in the case of any shortage of water taking place, the requirements of Onehunga must first be supplied. In urging the Council to accept the resolutions, the Mayor stated that they would obviate for years to come any possible chance of the Auckland City Council requiring to negotiate any loan for water purposes. After considerable discussion it was agreed to hold a special meeting of the Council in committee to-morrow night to consider oft what terms the Council is prepared to supply the City of Auckland with water.

A Caretaker. —Mr Rowe moved 'That the Foreman of Works be instructed that the whole of the recervoirs and property of the Council are under his charge, and that he be requested to report to the Cbuncil from time to time.' The motion was agreed to.

Mount Smart Reserve.—Mr Rowe moved 'That licenses be issued for grazing cattle on the Mount Smart Reserve, as originally agreed upon.'— Mr Shaldrick moved as an amendment, 'That the action of the Mayor in instructing the Town Clerk not to issue any more licenses for grazing cattle be ratified, and that the same instruction continue in force for another fortnight, pending a motion which he proposed to move later on.'—The subject was discussed at length, and all the speakers in favour of the motion emphasised the fact that the licenses are issued for the Mount Smart Reserve, such being the instruction given to all cattle owners when taking out their licenses; and further, that the owners know they have to take the sole responsibility of their cattle running at large. The original motion was carried. '<
