NEWMARKET HANDICAP AND AUSTRALIAN CUP.
Papers to hand to-day show that the Hon. W. A. Long's Beachcomber (by Lochiel—Seaweed) is a strong favourite for the Newmarket Handicap. He is quoted at 100 to 7. Beachcomber recently won the High Weight Handicap at Randwick, running the six furlongs in 1 m 14^s. The 'Telegraph' says:—Beachcomber retains his position as favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, and at 100 to 7 was backed. Bar one, the odds are 100 to 5 Yeneda, Veloce, Reaper, and Stand Off, who were each supported for fair amounts, standing at that figure. Blair was well backed at 100 to 4, but 100 to 2 about Vigorous went begging. No straight-out betting was done on the Australian Cup. The well-fancied candidates Bobadil, Wait-aßit, and Reka were taken in doubles with the Newmarket Handicap favourite at odds of 100 to 1.
