ATHLETICS.

The interest of athletes throughout the colony is at present centred in the N.Z. Championship Meeting, proceeding at Dunedin to-day. At this writing the meeting is still in futuro, but by this evening the result of the struggle for the championship banner should be known in Auckland. The Dunedin contingent are1 strong favourites for the banner, and the coveted honour will probably fall to them. The Auckland team, though good rightthrough, is too small, T am afraid, to pull off the aggregate, even though the individual members secured a good share of the championships. Dunedin have so many men entered that they are fairly certain to score a number of points in seconds and thirds, while some of their representatives are expected to win championship honours.

I append the number of firsts, seconds and thirds gained by the various competing clubs since the institution of the. championship meeting. It should be mentioned tha^ there was no banner till the. second year. The positions are thus shown: —

W. Huelcst.ep ran a good, race in the mile handicap at the Exhibition Sports on Saturday night. He was giving' starts up to' 90 yards, but he succeeded, nevertheless, in passing all but Beatson (73yds). Although he etit

down Eeatson's lead considerably the latter stuck to his work and finisneu well ahead of the crack. A. l'ear>:ou ran well in the half-mile, whcli He annexed after a good tuwsle with Lieax-

This is another case oi England following the lead oi .lie colonies. They have still to adopt our sensible record rule for quarter-mile hurdle races.
