THE SYNDICATE CLAIMS
fc& CHAMBERLAIN'S PROPOSALS
LONDON.- February 2. Mr Chamberlain offered to recom-
mend that the Colonies contributing ~■;" to-the cost o of the administration of New Guinea should repay Mr John Lawless and Sir Somers Vine's expenses incurred since April in connection . /with the land commission. The. syndicate claimed £15,000 compensation for refusal by the Imperial authorities to carry out the arrangement, but were now willing to accept a considerably less sum in order to settle, or, accept a grant of forty thousand acres. >>Sir William Macgregor does not -recommend the latter alternative.
The Liverpool Syndicate was willing M t° amalgamate with the syndicate on whose behalf Mr Lowless acted pro- " Tided he withdrew his objection.
