NEW ZEALAND'S POPULATION.

A.ERIYALS AND DEPARTURES DUE

ING SEVEN YEARS

■\Ve are indebted to Mr Yon Dadlesen, llegistrar-Ueneral, for the following particulars of population increases during- the past seven years: — Arrivals. Departures. Excess of Arrivals over Departures. Year. Persons. Persons. Persons. lssa n-xz rsjtH 4,** iS'.'o ■;b,i;!s lo.Tss i>>. The returns from which the above figures are taken show that for the years IS9^ to .1898, inclusive, New Zea,Jaud has annually gained population by an excess of arrivals over departures, according to the recorded numbers over and above the natural increase by excess of births over deaths. Working from the returns, the excess of arrivals for the seven-year period is found to be 25,438 persons, drawn from other colonies or countries. This number may be somewhat greater than the actual fact, but probably not very much so. Any error would be caused by the numbers-stated for the departures being short of the truth, but as far as relates to the U.S.S. Company's steamers, the figures given by , the Customs are checked by information obtained directly from the company on the return of every vessel leaving the colony.

Of the total arrivals in seven years (146,039) only 10,925 were children, i.e., under twelve years, a.nd of the total departures (120,601), 11,947 were counted as children.

Eight hundred and fifty-nine Atistriaiis arrived in the year 1898, but the returns do not distinguish how many went- away.

WELLINGTON, this day

The estimated population of the colony on December 31 lust was 783,----317 persons, including 39,854 Maoris. Mules numbered 413,707, and females 369,52b. Chinese are included in the population given above. The number in New Zealand on December SI, 1898, was estimated to be J4G-1 of whom 31 were females.

Excluding Maoris, the pouhition of the colony increased by 14,447, or at the rate of 1.98 per cent, during the year. To this increase excess of births over deaths contributed 11,711, and excess of arrivals over departures 2096. The birth rate for the colony in 1898 was 25.74 per 1000 of mean population, and the death rate 9.84, as against 25.9G and 9.14 respectively in 1807.

The number of births registered in 1898 (18,955) slightly exceeded the number in 1897 (18,737), but with the increased population, the rale per 1000 for 1898 is lower.

The deaths in 189S (7244) exceeded the number registered in 1897 (6595) by 049, and thus increased the rate per 1000 from 9.14 to 9.84.

The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maori""" solemnised in IS9S is estimarrri at 5020, giving a rate of 6.82 per 1000 of mean population, against 4928 and fi.B3, the actual number and rate in 1897.
