MEETING OF CONSULS.
THE GERMAN CONSUL DISSENTS
A meeting of the Consuls for Germany, Great Britain and the United States, and the captains of the British man-of-war Porpoise and the German man-of-war Falke, was held by previous arrangement immediately after the delivery of the.judgment, and here the German Consul-General displayed the cloven hoof. It is an open secret that at that meeting that official horrified his colleagues' by decaring that he would not recognise Malietoa. Tanu as king or regard the judgment of the Chief Justice as final, notwithstanding the section of the Berlin Act which declores that the Treaty Powers shall iib.ide by the decision of the Chief Justice;'and he absolutely refused to co-operate with the British and United States Consuls in insisting upon the Samoans —who had gathered in large numbers —dispersing and returning to their homes. Had he co-operated with his colleagues, and had the German man-of-war Falke assisted in the naval programme which was prepared by Captain Sturdee, of H.M.s. Porpoise, there is not the, slightest doubt that the Samoans would have peaceably obeyed the Chief Justice's judgment. But* no! he pitilessly adhered to the course which he had indicated at the Meeting. ■ ,
