SCREW GUN AMISS.
. From Wellington comes the bad news that Screw Gun has gone amiss— or broken down is the wording of the telegram. This, though, lam inclined to think is an exaggerated way of putting it. However, one thing is certain—Mr Stead is to be without the services of his crack for a time, for he has had to be withdrawn from his engagements in the Empire city. When Screw Gun was saddled up for the Royal Stakes at the recent A.R.C. Summer Meeting he was pronounced1 as lame by experts, but it did not interfere with the running of the colt m the race. I questioned -R. J. Mason, the Yaldhurst trainer, on the afternoon he left here for Wellington as to the soundness of the son of Hotchkiss, and he assured me that he had had an anxious time with the colt, but that he was almost sound agam. It would seem, though, that the wOrk since apportioned Screw Gjm at the Hutt has disabled him.
