ALLEGED CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

In the S.M. Court, Ngaruawahia, on Monday, before Captain Jackson, S.M., and Justices Olivier • and Rathbone, Joseph White, aged 22, was charged for that ho on the 23th December, being- the driver of three horses, had cruelly illtreated the same by driving them attached to a vehicle, they having then sore, shoulders. Mr Gresham, solicitor, of Te Awamutu, conducted the prosecution on behalf of the Auckland Society for the Prevention .of Cruelty to Animals. Mr Dyer defended; The accused pleaded guilty. The whole of the charges were fully proved by the evidence of Messrs Arthur Morris, cream factory manager at Ngaruawahia, Gibson Roper,. and Constable John Cavanagh. All tha animals showed signs of recently sore shoulders, one of them being over 20 years old and only fit to be slaughtered. , The Bench severely admonished the accused and convicted him, the lines being in each case £1 10/, with costs in each case, £1 9/ and 6/, paid by police for carbolic oil, etc., for dressing the wounds.. Total, £fl 11.

Three charges against the. owner of the horses (C. Lawrence Sutton, of Hamilton, livery stable keeper) werre then heard. He was charged with failing to provide proper and sufficient feed.

It appearing that although the animals had not been 'hard' fed for over two months, they had had ample grass feed at Whatawhata, and were only worked on alternate days, these informations were dismissed.
