TEMPERANCE CONVENTION.
A meeting- of the members of the Auckland Provincial Prohibition Council was held this afternoon in the Central Mission Hall, when there were seventeen members present. The Eev. \Y. .7. Williams, who presided, said it had been decided to hold this convention during1 Exhibition time because they thought Sir H. Stout, Mr T. Taylor,'M.H.R., and the Rev. F. Isitt would be present,, but these hopes had not been realised. Mr Isitt had, however, forwarded a paper.
Mr W. J. Macdermott read nn instructive paper upon 'Work Amongst the Youn«-.' He advocated absolute prohibition, and pointed out that 30 years ago the colony spent at the rate of £10 per head upon drink. If they did that- now the expenditure would be G7.659.100 per annum, instead of £2.000,000, as at the present time. Mr Macdermott also gave interesting- statistics as to the progress of the Band of Hope Union. He considered that hopes for the future depended upon the work amoug-st the young-.
