THE MAORI CANOE RACE.

Sir,—ln your issue of the 4th inst. you blame the Maoris for refusing at the last minute to pull in the big canoe race on Tuesday, and you say it was not the fault of the North Shore Regatta Committee, who did all in their power, to carry out the programme. Now, this is not strictly the truth. That race was set down in the programme as £50 for Ist prize; but at the last minute the Committee told the Maoris they could bnly give £10, which sum the Maoris refused to prill for. Now, can you honestly blame them for refusing to compete ou these terms, altered at the last minute; or can you honestly say lhe Committee did all they could to carry but the programme? I was one of the crew of one of the canoes that intended com-
