MILITARY DRILL IN SCHOOLS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

k WELLINGTON, this day

The. Education Board's scheme of military drill in schools meets with warm approval. General French, Commandant of the New South Wales Forces, who is on a visit here, says the system in that colony is similar, and has been a decided success. General French suggests, that Martini-Henry cavalry carbines should be substituted for miniature rifles. The latter are useless for defence purposes, while the former can be used, if necessary, by the militia or volunteers. They can be got in Victoria or New South Wales for half the cost of rifles. Lieutenant McDonald, instructor, originally recommended carbines, but abandoned the idea in the belief that they could not be obtained. He will again recoim mend them to the Board. Only the bigger boys will be supplied with weapons.
