THE EXHIBITION.

r *'A good number patronised the Exhibition to-day. On Saturday night ©ne of the great attractions in the machinery court was one of Tangye's fcoupled geared winding engines of 70 Ihorse power, which was in full motion. JThis was shown in the section of J. Chambers and Son. The firm also show a novelty in the shape of a kerosene engine, and a duplex pump, which throws sixteen thousand galSons of water per hour. Mr Chas. Whitehead's glass engraving and emblem handkerchief stall, tnear the entrance to the Rotorua Court, still provides an attraction for many; and so does the Bohemian glassware exhibit of A. Zech and Co., ito which a number of new choice articles from Sydney have just, been added. The Exhibition mint is also .another attraction. [ MILITARY TOURNAMENT. ■ On Saturday the Exhibition was ftdsited by large numbers of people, fthe principal attraction being the military tournament, which was .brought to a conclusion in the evening. The judges were: Bayonet, physical, tent pitching, Captain Browne j(H.M.S. Tauranga), Ct.plains McKenzie and Major; artillery events, Captain UVfcKeUzie; bayonet v. bayonet, sword jr. sword, bayonet v. sword, Dr. Finlay and Captain O'Brien; cavalry events, ILieut.-Colohel Banks and Mr MatIthews; timekeepers, Messrs G. Read and J. Marshall.

The events resulted as follows:— $ Leaping by sections: First prize, f£lo. —Two squads from the Auckland Mounted Rifles entered, and the prize iwas won by Farrier-Sergeant Kinloch, Corporal Todd, Private Nolan, and £Bugler Todd.

Sword v. sword: First prize, £2; Second, £I.—E. A. Bruce beat Sergeant Jeppe by four points to two, and Professor Byrne beat the winner {by four points to one.

Manual and firing exercises: Prizes F£lo and £s.—Five teams competed. iNo. 1 Company Permanent Militia, .with 88 points, winning-, and Christ's College Rifles, Christchurch, taking isecond place with 87J points. The (other competitors were Christchurch (City Rifles, 81 points; Auckland College Rifles, 73 points; Royal Marines, H.M.S. Tauranga, 63 points. The [Marines, who did their work splendidly, went through the wrong drill. Sword (mounted) v. bayonet: Prizes J£2 and £I.—The first bout, between Mr Banks, of the Mounted Rifles, and Private Maiden, of the College Rifles, |W&s won by the bayonet by four points to two. Colour-Sergeant Hay J(N6. 3 Natives) and oergeant .Teppe {(Mounted Rifles) next met, the baylonet again winning. No more mounted men having, entered, Maiden met Hay, the former scoring two to Hay's one. In the final Professor Byrne jwon by four to one.

Wrestling on horseback. —This was iwon by Farrier-Sergeant Kinloch's team —Privates Finlayson, Newton, Morrow, and Hitchens.

Lemon cutting: Prizes £2 and £I.— Corporal Ferguson was the only comSetitof to cut both Jemons, Sergeant eppe talcing second prize. Bayonet v. bayonet. —Professor I&yrne and Mr E. A. Bruce competed, ifche former winning by four to nil.

Limber race: Prizes, £4 and £2.— Three teams raced, each drawing a Uimber the length of the track. Corporal Jones' team, Gunners Mewburn, Butt, Strong, Young, and Carpenter, (Winning, with Sergeant Sherson's (team se'eohd.

Tent pitching: Prize, £s.—Three Squads from the Collegeißifles and one from the New Zealand Natives, No. 1, .entered. The College team. Corporal Gorrie, Privates Roberts, Shera, Steele, Beliefs, and Fitzpatrick, won in 3 mm 39 2-ssec, with Colour-Sergeant Eastgate's Natives team second, their time Jbeing 3min 45sec. 100 Yds. Race, for N.C.'s. Prizes, £3 and £ 1.-—Bombardier Campbell, of the *A' Battery, won by 2yds from R. Hill, Of the Auckland Rifles, Corporal jShortt, of the 'A' Battery, being third.

Bayonet Exercise.—Christ's College, S3 poir.ts, 1; No. 1 Company Permanent Militia, 82 i points, 2; Christchurch City Rifles, 77 points, 3.

Aggregate Prize, -£10.—The prize "offerfcd for the aggregate prize for jbftyonet exercise, physical drill,, mantual and firing exercise, was carried off . iby the Christ's College Rifles with 246 ipointS out of a possible 300. Permanent Militia, 241 points, were second; and Christchurch City Rifles, 238 points, third. Hearty cheers were given for the winning team. Exhibition by Marines. —The Ma_Tines from the Tauranga gave an excellent exhibition performance, gone through in a perfect manner. (hm-drill competition: First, prize, WSJ 6; second prize, £5. —Two teams jfrom the 'A.Battery competed. Each Hetachment mounted .and dismounted Jone of the Battery nine pounders and fired one blank charge. Sergeant Hazard's team. Which took 4rain 6 4-5 feec in the drill, won with 83 points; Sergeant Sherson's team with 81 rfrOints being second, their time '.feeing 4min 10 4-5 sec. The winding team were Sergeant Hazard, fipfporal. Woods, Bombardiers Badi|iiey and Baragwanath, Gunners Con£idine, Guthrie, Lee, Young, and Butt. There has been recently added to fthe exhibition, in a space alongside »T, Chambers and Sons' machinery, a gplefidid exhibit from the celebrated aerated manufactory of J. Grey and Sons. On neatly got up shelves, in [bottles, ate displayed the many articles the firm turn out, including all Sorts of cordials, champagne cider, and kola, tonic waters, Roslio nerve .ionic, Dr. Stratford's sarsaparilla, >ginger ale, club soda water, lemonade, and ginger beer. All the bottles are handsomely labelled and got up, and •the whole bear an appearance equal to the imported article. The exhibit reflects great credit on the old-estab-lished firm, and shows what can be done in the matter of cordials and Berated waters. In front of the space are two stands, where aerated water from Te Aroha springs is given free Y>f charge. TE AROHA. Mr C. Grey also devotes part of his Space to advertising the Hot Springs and Sanatorium at Te Aroha. A number of photographs of the district and springs are shown, besides a picture of the new bath recently opened by the Hon, A. J. Cadman. H. E. PARTRIDGE AND CO. Partridge and Co., the well known local merchants. __n a handsome glass case the firm show, as agents, splendid samples of 'Ascot' tobacco from Wm. Cameron and Bros., Petersburg, U.S.A. Tobacco in three grades of strength — mild aromatic, medium, and full —are shown, besides magnificent samples of filler and wrapper tobacco. Samples of the new Venus, Queen, Planter's Twist, Chain Twist, and Checker Board are also displayed, besides boxes of Ascot in different grades, and other lines o f'fragrant weed.' The exhibit- is tastefully got up.
