AUSTRALIAN CABLES
AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW.
THE CANADIAN MAIL SERVICE. NEW ZEALAND LIKELY TO BE • DROPPED. SYDNEY, this day.
Mr James Burns, of Burns, Philp and Co., has returned from an extended tour abroad and in the bast. In an interview he stated that it is intended shortly making an improvement in the Canadian-Pacific service. He could safely say it would be made a three weeks service, but whether it would be even more frequent present arrans-ements would not warrant him saving. He does not think there will be any extension of the Japanese mail line to New Zealand It would not. be remunerative. He thinks Sydney will always be the terminal n'ort. 'The question of continuing to include New Zealand in the CanadianPacific route is under review, certain offers have been made by the Queensland Government, and if these offers are accepted New Zealand wn.ll be excluded from the course, and the steamers' will come right on to bycinev from Queensland. Mr imrns was impressed with the pcssibi ities ot extending the Australian trade m the East. There is a prospect of the American oil trade being challenged by petroleum developments JMi Burns says his firm will probably sink 30,000 oil plants.
