The first-class protected steel cruiser Crescent is to be added to the Australian station.

The Crescent belongs to the sea service deck-protected class, and is a similar vessel to the Royal Arthur, the flagship of the Australian squadron. Her dimensions are:—Length, 360 ft; breadth. Gift; draught, 24ft; displacement, 7700 tons; indicated horsepower, 12,000; coal capacity, 850 tons; speed, 19.5 knots. Her armament consists of one 22-ton 8.L.R.1., 12 6-in quick-firing, six Gpr. and 3pr., and seven magazine guns. She was built at Portsmouth in 1892, at a cost of over £400,000, and paid a visit to Sydney about three years ago, with relief crews for tbe 'Australian sqiiadron.
