JAPANESE MAIL SERVICE.
(By Telegraph —Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
The Japanese Consul at Wellington (Mr A. S. Aldrich) has for some time been negotiating with the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Company for an extension of their mail service to New Zealand. The colony is not prepared to offer a subsidy, but as a fair, amount of China and Japan trade is done with New Zealand, much of it in transhipments at Sydney, some special inducement may be held out to what is called the Japan P. and 0. to take up the trade. Mr Aldrich states the extension of the Japanese mail line to New Zealand has not been definitely settled, though it has been spoken of for some time past on the other side. He does not think the colony will see the line here this year. New vessels are building for the Australian trade, and will supersede the present steamers in November.
