WAX' VESTAS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Becent advices from England appear to make it plain that wax matches cannot possibly be made ./without the certainty that • some of those engaged in the manufacture win incur a loathsome disease and eventually a lingering and painful death. That being the case would it not be worth while to forego the use of vestas and usefsafety matches instead, as no such consequences seem .to attach to the making of thelatter.

It may perhaps be objected that it would-be of no use for some to take this step unless all did so, but if only one person in. 10 would give up the use of vestas the sum of human suffering and death from this cause would be reduced by one terith—a result certainly worth the small sacrifice of convenience involved.—l am, etc., / HUMANITY.
