A NEW ELEMENT.

That ardent analyser of the air we breathe, Professor Ramsay, will evidently not be satisfied till he has proved that with every breath we take in a mixture as Complicated as that sublime ■ American drink known as 'Sudden Death.' The discoverer of argon, has now found a new element in the air which he proposes to call 'Krypton.' The name seems almost too good for the new gas, which, like 'Argon,' is one of the drones of the chemical world. It apparently never does anything- and never effects a combination with anything-, and since it: only exists in the air in the proportion of 1 to 20,000 its discovery hardly appears to have been worth the trouble. Professor Ramsay obtained 'Krypton' by evaporating- 750 cubic centimetres of liquid air down to ten centimetres, and the new element being considerably heavier than argon and just as lazy was naturally' left in 'the dregs. These 'dregs' were then evaporated, and the resulting gas being deprived of its oxygen and nitrogen, the residue was 'Krypton.'
