FORTS TO BE
BOMBARDED
WASHINGTON, June 2G
Ihe American crusier Charleston, which recently left San Francisco for the Philippines, with stores, ammunition, etc., for Admiral Dewey's fleet, has been ordered to reduce the forts in the Ladrones, a group of small islands belonging to Spain. [The Ladrone or Marianne Islands are situated between 12 and 17 N. and 144 and 145 East. They consist of 17 large and numerous small islands, 5 of which are inhabited. The population at one time 100,000 is now greatly reduced. The islands are of volcanic origin. The principal islands of the Ladrones Group are Gurjan, Rota, Saipan, and Tainan, and on the first named is the capital town, St. Ignaeio de Agana. The Ladrone islands are only about, five hundred miles distant from the Philippines, and about two hundred miles distant from the Caroline Islands, another Spanish possession in close proximity to the Philippines.]
