FREEMAN'S BAY SEWER.
We hope the Harbour Board tomorrow will dispose of. this vexed question by adopting the common sense solution embodied in the resolutions oi which notice lias been given by Mr Devore. If the Board carry out the work under their own supervision and control they- can ensure that itwill be done to their complete satisfaction. Any question of liability or right would not be prejudiced either way. Each body would pay half: the cost, and the way would be cleared for completing the reclamation of a large area of valuable land belonging to the Board which is at present wholly unreproductive as well as unsightly, and upon the money invested in which the Board now pay a heavy sum annually in interest. The Board can well afford to act in a spirit of generosity over this matter, because the action of the Gas Company in, cutting down its property and covering up the noisesome silt with a thick deposit of clean deodorizing earth, has added many thousands of pounds value to the Board's properly. Without that covering1 it is doubtful whether the reclaimed land would have been fit to occupy for many years owing to the decaying animal matter contained in the marine deposits, if the Board, through blind antogonism to the City Council obstruct the construction of the sewer much longer, and the contractor proceeds to deposit the balance of the earth at the back of the intake, the interests of the harbour trust will suffer very seriously. As we have said, Mr Devore's proposition open* up a sensible and practical way,out of the difficulty, and the Board will act wisely in adopting it.
